the cult of IPod
Do you own an IPod, maybe you could help?
I think it was sometime last week when I strolled around the plaza, trying to score Episode III tickets that I started to notice a secret group of people moving about, nodding their heads, oblivious to others expect the those who wore the same signs of their cult - white earpieces plugged into both ears.
I've seen these folk before.
They're growing in numbers...
I've noticed some oddities about them, not enough to warrant more though at the time. Anyways, I made a mental note of some of my observations; they're silent, intimidating and intriguing. What are they listening to, I thought. I'm curious... Could it be THAT good, listening to the same soundtrack for the day or week or month? How often do these people update their playlists? Do they listen to new music; music that they've not heard before? Questions started popping up, I want to know the answers! I'm sure it beats lugging around a binder full of cd's, no question!
Let me ask this, when you go on a road trip do you take your entire cd collection or a few cd's you think you'd listen to that relate to your adventure? What about the day-to-day beat rocking, do you listen to the same stuff day in and day out? How frequently do you seek new music? Do you let it find you? Do you even care that you're jamming to some new show or new cd release (I must admit, the new Weezer is TIGHT)?
I know I rotate the music in my car once a week. I have "staples" in my ride, but, I put alot of new shit into my car daily. Yesterday I rocked Idiot Pilot; a new band that I've taken a liking to. Last week it was a new Disco Biscuits show (04-26-01 to be exact). Currently, I'm listening to some random livetronica band called Lotus. I found out about them from a link on another blog and decided to give them a try. What will it be next week?
On roadtrips I tend to clear out my car of what I've been listening to, even the staples, then re-evalutate what I'm taking. I've had friends that MUST bring their entire music collection, is that necessary? Does the IPod provide the same luxury? Only now, you've got all your music in your pocket; the size of a pack of cigarettes. What about rotating the cd's, chaning up the beats every so often? What about tuning into said cities local radio stations?
As a music fiend, I find myself listening to new sounds/bands/dj's on a regular basis. I'd thank internet radio / streaming radio for that. Recommendations help, I trust my friends choices in music! I know internet radio helps my discovery of new sounds because there is a wide variety of music stations for me to pick from. Also, I have the ability to change what I'm listening to if I'm not feeling it. Does the conventional radio do that? It doesnt have the variety for me. Plus it's rarely underground or "new". College radio stations are my conventional savior in this matter. College radio stations play a wide variety of beats - just hope you live close enough! Would satellite radio make sense for someone like me? Is satellite radio "streaming"? Is it just like conventional radio. Variety doesnt mean 400 channels! Only thing is, now you have 400 channels to choose from - i'm sure something will sound "new" to you (sounds like digital/satellite cable)!
So, would an IPod hinder your music experience or benefit it; opening up your ears to new sounds - is that much necessary? Does IPod make you musically stupid?
Does it suck being music snob, yes - but those 2-5 minutes make it worth the snobbery!
I think I'll be happy once I invent a media player for the car and person (through WiFi Max of course) that lets me surf the internet for radio stations. Said device will have the ability to play mp3's and cd's and function as a normal radio.
I need to get working....
